Achievements
Up to June 2010, two of SACEMA’s students have graduated with PhD degrees, and eleven have graduated with MSc degrees, many (including the two most recent) earning distinctions. Of the MSc graduates, seven have continued with SACEMA into their doctoral studies. The fourth annual ‘Research Days’ meeting was held at SACEMA on 9 - 11 March 2010, with 25 students presenting their work, and spending useful informal time in discussions with each other and with mentors. The popular annual outreach event: “Introduction to the Applications of Mathematics in Biology and Medicine”, held at AIMS for a week each July since 2007 (so dubbed the “epi-intro winter-school”), has attracted a number of talented students into SACEMA. Mathematical Modelling Workshops have also been held annually at AIMS in collaboration with the US-Africa initiative of DIMACS/Rutgers, and the fourth of these took place in May/June. In addition to these annual events, regular seminars take place at SACEMA and at other hub universities, where SACEMA students and visitors present their research. Other occasional training events take place, such as a Microsimulation Workshop, a Training Day on TB and HIV Modelling, and (Feb - April 2010) a course on Epidemiology and Research Methodology. For more details of these events see to the calender.
