Capacity building
The first of SACEMA’s Mission Statement objectives is:
Developing the necessary human capacity and infrastructure to advance epidemiological modelling and analysis.
This includes mathematical, statistical, biological and computing capacity, and, because of the trans-disciplinary nature of epidemiology and the urgent challenges South Africa is facing, must aim at sustained engagement with public health professionals and policy-makers, health economists, and clinical epidemiologists. It is an important part of SACEMA’s mission to attract talented African mathematicians, statisticians and informaticians, equip them for effective multi-disciplinary research, and bring them into genuine engagement with the biological, medical and human realities. Only thus will modelling be relevant, timely and meaningful.
