SACEMA is a national research Centre of Excellence, funded by the Department of Science & Technology, administered by the National Research Foundation and hosted by Stellenbosch University. As a national centre, SACEMA funds students working in Biostatistics and Mathematical Biology and Epidemiology. SACEMA's work focuses on the mathematical modelling of disease transmission and progression, particularly in relation to South Africa's major health challenges.
The full-time bursaries are as follows:
- Master's (two years @ R70 000 per annum)
- Doctoral (three years @ R100 000 per annum)
Students from the following fields are welcome to apply: mathematics, biostatistics, community and public health. However, other students who want to work in the area of mathematical epidemiology are also welcome to contact us.
To apply, please download the application form from the SACEMA website here.
Closing date for applications: Friday 15 October 2010

Scholarships background
In its role as a DST-NRF funded national Centre, SACEMA hopes to interact with all interested parties across South Africa. As such, SACEMA is happy to fund research based anywhere in South Africa and, in special circumstances, even abroad. This would include collaboration by various means, but we are particularly interested in funding graduate students - with a view to developing South African capacity in the area of quantitative epidemiology.
Funding offered for postgraduate students
We are interested in funding Masters and Doctoral students. Preference will be given to South Africans and to previously-disadvantaged students, as per the NRF criteria. In addition to providing funding, we would be able to assist with co-supervision of students if necessary.
Interested parties are requested to forward a short proposal (maximum two A4 pages) of their intended study to SACEMA. Where the application is initiated by a student it is strongly suggested that she/he identifies a member of the faculty at her/his institution who is willing and able to help with framing the proposal and with supervising the research thereafter.
Faculty members, for their part, are also encouraged to identify students with an interest in, and capacity to carry out, mathematical analysis in the field of epidemiology.
Epidemiological modelling and analysis
SACEMA would also very much like to make contact with interested researchers around Africa who have access to, or may be collecting, data that requires epidemiological analysis. To this end, we would appreciate it if you could contact us if interested, or forward this to people who may be working in this area. SACEMA is particularly keen to fund research that is both sound theoretically and is also strongly linked to practical health problems and available data in the regions.
