Brian Williams
Brian Williams has worked in the StopTB Department of the World Health Organization in Geneva for the past five years. His primary interest is in the epidemiology and the control of TB, especially in Africa and in places where there is a high burden of HIV infection. He has published papers on a range of diseases including measles, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, silicosis, malaria, tuberculosis and HIV.

Ekkehard Kopp
His role in the establishment of SACEMA was largely administrative and managerial, developing its original conception together with Brian Williams and Wayne Getz. He served as principal organiser (with Fritz Hahne, Director of AIMS) and chair of the founding workshop "Modelling the dynamics of HIV/AIDS" (Stellenbosch, December 2003).

Wayne Getz
Prof Wayne Getz is Professor of Environment Science and current Chair of the Division of Organisms and the Environment within the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, College of Natural Resources at the University of California, Berkeley. His expertise and research lie in the areas of Theoretical and Applied Population Dynamics.

Carl Lombard
Dr Carl Lombard is the Director of the Biostatistics Research Unit at the Medical Research Council in Cape Town. His areas of interest lie in the design and analysis of cluster randomised controlled trials; data and safety monitoring of clinical trials; and survival analysis of recurrent and multiple events.

Thandwa Mthembu
Professor Thandwa Mthembu is Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Partnerships and Advancement at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, colloquially known as Wits. He also has executive responsibility for the Student Affairs portfolio.

Ntuthuko Bhengu
Dr Bhengu is a medical doctor who also holds an MBA from the University of Wales, and an MPH in Health Care Management from Harvard. He has extensive experience as a healthcare management consultant and has served on the Pharmaceutical Pricing Committee Working Group. He is currently the Medical Director of Biotech Laboratories (Pty) Ltd, and is serving on the National Advisory Council on Innovation (2004-2007) by appointment of the Minister of Science and Technology.

Salim Karim
Prof Salim S. Abdool Karim, MBChB, PhD, is a clinical infectious diseases epidemiologist whose main current research interests are in microbicides and vaccines to prevent HIV infection and implementing antiretroviral therapy in resource constrained settings. He is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in Durban, South Africa. He is also Professor in Clinical Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and Adjunct Professor in Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is Director of CAPRISA - Centre for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa.

Darrell J. Comins
Prof Comins is based in the Physics Department of the University of Witwatersrand, where he is currently the Director of the DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials. His research interests lie in the areas of Brillouin and Raman light scattering spectroscopy, absorption and luminescence spectroscopy, elastic properties of solids, superionic conductors, defects and irradiation damage in solids.
